For a pulse of longer duration, multiphoton absorption can produce free electrons, and the avalanche effect will then produce a plasma whose density can become significant. The plasma can then absorb and defocus the collapsing beam. This animation shows how the light field intensity (blue) as a function of transverse coordinate and time evolves as the light propagates over a distance of about 1.5 centimeters. The pink field represents the plasma density. Once the light intensity is sufficiently high, the plasma density increases leading to a "hole" in the light field.
