Filament dynamics in condensed media with normal group velocity dispersion
(GVD) may be understood in terms of spontaneous formation and successive interaction of
nonlinear X-waves. Shown is an animation of the far-field spectrum evolution shows how with increasing propagation distance
the spectrum fills up the union of the phase matched regions. In particular, the combined phase
matched regions exhibit the characteristic X-shape around the origin that is associated with
X-waves. Of course, the extremities in each region are not “populated” because of the finite
bandwidth of the spatio-temporal spectrum of the nonlinear response that is not reflected in
the TWM picture. In fact, the transverse extent of the spectrum is controlled by the transverse “dimension” of the nonlinear response peaka
