Critical collapse due to self focussing can be halted by normal group velocity dispersion (GVD). Even a very small GVD will become important because the peak (in time) of anoptical pulse will collapse after propagating shorter distance than the parts of the pulse just before and after, leading to extremely sharp curvature in the field, which leads to a strong influence from the GVD. The GVD arrests the collapse and splits the pulse in to two less intense pieces which are below threshold for collapse. These smaller pulses diffract (spread).
